Why XHTML and CSS?

Although around for several years, XHTML and CSS are rapidly becoming the lingua franca of the World Wide Web. The W3C, the board the dictates the standards of Internet communication has prepared this standards and they are a now the future of the web, both in terms of browsers and for other web-sensitive applications.

XHTML is HTML, but cleaner, more well-formed, and much more flexible. Best yet, all modern browers support and are able to consistantly present the data from XHTML web documents. Moreover, XHTML and its coherent and clean structure can be used seemlessly in conjuction with dynamic AJAX applications (such as Google Maps), and its standardization has made it one of the electronic archive mediums of choice, since there really is no "Optimized for Internet Explorer/Netscape/etc." XHTML gives portable and compatible structure of web documents, making them valuable and recyclable for decades to come.

Where XHTML provides structure, CSS takes over for style. Cascading Style Sheets allow, much like a publisher's style sheet, the enforcement of a brand/design standard acrosss a variety of pages and documents. CSS can dictate how wide, what color, and where content is laid out, as well as what is seen by a printer and what is seen by a web browser. In the end, CSS allows as site to maintain consistant design, regardless of what content is added to it, and well-designed sites can change look and feel, just by a change to their style sheet (see CSS Zen Garden). CSS paired with XHTML can produce sites that can be seen across a variety of mediums and allow for the use of the site by seeing visitors and well as the vision impared.
